Who I am... (Oneshot)

Title: Who I am...
Rating: PG. A little swearing, but otherwise it's very tame!
Genre: H/C, fluff.
Pairing: Dave/Noel. Implied Julian/Noel
Summary: Julian has a family now, a life that doesn't involve Noel, and Noel's not taking it very well... Who'll be there to pick up the pieces?
Disclaimer: Disclaimer: Noel and Dave belong only to themselves. The events in this are entirely fictional; a product of my overly vivid, and mostly twisted, imagination. No harm/offence intended, and no money is being made from the writing of this.

Author Notes: Not much really, just a fluffy little ficlet I wrote in a couple of hours this evening (procrastinating on my other wips!)... A songfic of sorts, to Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls (although the verses are out of order, hope that isn't too confusing!). Not the most original of songs, I know, but the bunny wouldn't leave me alone! Apologies for any mistakes; this is unbetaed. Italics are lyrics...

The champagne and cocktails are flowing, and there's loud music and good company, everything Dave usually looks for in a good night out, but he just can't get into it tonight.

And I don't want the world to see me,
Cause I don't think that they'd understand.

He sighs as he sips idly at his lager, eyes flicking to the dancefloor where Rich is currently entertaining the masses with a lewd dance that only he could pull off, clearly drunk and basking in the attention. Normally he'd be up there himself, joining in and having a laugh, but he's just not in the mood for celebrating at the moment. His eyes fall back to the drink in front of him as he swirls the glass, looking down as the liquid curls around it, searching for the answers to all the universal questions.

There's nothing there though, and he sighs again, jumping slightly and looking up as a glass is unceremoniously dumped in front of him, some of the contents spilling over onto the wooden surface of the table. He can't help but smile, despite his gloom, at Mike, as he staggers slightly and falls into the seat next to Dave, leaning on him as Dave throws a friendly arm around him.

"'S fucking crazy out there!" All the alcohol he's drunk is making his lisp worse, and Dave laughs again, affectionately ruffling his sweat dampened hair. "So many fans. Some of them are pretty hot too."

"Yeah." Dave raises an eyebrow and looks back out to the dancefloor, warily eyeing a group of girls, skirts obscenely short and tops tight. "And how many of them are legal?"

"Dunno. Haven't asked!" Mike laughs and Dave joins in, shaking his head. "Anyway," Mike continues, once he's finished giggling. "Why aren't you up there with us man? You're missing out on all the fun!"

Dave shakes his head, shrugging as he swigs back the last of his lager, eyeing the bright blue drink Mikes brought for him with no small amount of suspicion.

"'S a blue haze. Try it, 'S nice." Dave frowns, picking it up and sniffing it before taking a small sip. It does, in fact, taste quite nice, and he takes a longer one, feeling the alcohol burning his throat and pleasantly warming him as it goes down. "Told you." Mike's smile, whilst a little lopsided, is most definitely smug, and Dave rolls his eyes.

"What are you doing sitting down anyway?" He asks the shorter man. "Can't handle the pace?"

"Oh I can handle it, don't you worry about me!" Mike smirks. "I just wondered why you were being such a miserable fuck, that's all."

"'M not being miserable!"

"Yes you are." Mike sits up, pushing himself up from Dave's shoulder and looking decidedly more sober all of a sudden. "What's up?"

"Nothing." Dave shrugs, not really wanting to go into what's wrong, but knowing that Mike will probably guess all the same. True to form, Mike sighs.

"He'll be alright you know. You shouldn't worry about him so much. He's old enough and ugly enough to look after himself."

Dave shrugs. "I know, it's just, weird I guess. He's always the life and soul, you know."

"Yeah, I s'pose." Mike stares at Dave for a second, eyes surprisingly clear for someone who's drunk as much as he has. "Look, why don't you just go back if you're that worried about him? You're only gonna have a shit night out if you stop here..."

"He said he wanted to be on his own for a while."

Mike rolls his eyes, poking Dave in the side. "Oh come on! You know Noel by now; he's worse than a fucking woman. Saying one thing and meaning another. I'm sure he'd like the company really."

"Yeah but I don't wanna bug him."

"Stop making excuses. You've got two choices; stay here and mope or go back to the bus and check he's okay. Either way, make up your mind. You're ruining the atmosphere with your fucking moping!"

"Oh, thanks!" Dave says, tone belying his words. "It's always nice to know when you're not wanted!" Mike laughed again, picking up a beer mat and tossing it at Dave, before he sobered, looking at Dave with a seriousness that Dave knew from experience meant Mike was going to say something he didn't like...

"You should tell him, Dave. All this is bullshit."

Dave sighs, shaking his head and taking another, longer, swig from the odd looking cocktail, wincing slightly at the strength. "We've been through this before Mike. Where exactly is that gonna get me?"

"One step ahead from here, that's where! This is getting ridiculous Dave. Believe me, I know, Noel can be an ass at times, but he's your friend, and you know as well as I do that he'd never do anything to hurt a friend deliberately. And at least you'd know then, either way."

Sighing, Dave looks down again, realising the logic and wondering when exactly the shorter fielding got so bloody clever, when he looks up, Mike's staring at him with a knowing glint in his eye.

When everything's made to be broken,
I just want you to know who I am.

"Go on. Go see if he's alright. Then at the very least you can be miserable fuckers together!" Dave's eyes widen, and he scowls playfully, fingers finding Mike's sides and tickling until the younger man gasps and pulls away, breathing heavily and still giggling lightly. "Seriously, Dave," he says, once he's got his breath back. "Go back to the bus. Talk to him." Dave nods.

"Yeah. Maybe," he adds, at Mike's smug expression, and Mike rolls his eyes, making a grab for Dave's half finished drink.

"And leave the booze to those that appreciate it!"

"Oh, I don't think so!" Dave smirks as he grabs the glass, downing its contents in one and laughing at Mike's outraged expression. "See you later, Mike!"

"Arse!" Mike says, although his tone is playful. He stands, wrapping his arms around Dave and Dave squeezes back, whispering his thanks into the shorter mans ear. "Soppy bastard."

"Yeah, love you, too, Mike!" Dave grins, ruffling Mike's hair and nodding at Mike. He waves to Rich on the way out, who just lifts his top in reply, flashing Dave his stomach, and Dave rolls his eyes, turning to make his easy through the crowd to the entrance of the club.

*****

The bus is unusually quiet as he steps onto it, and he sighs, wondering if this is such a good idea. Shrugging off his coat and toeing off his shoes as he gets into the kitchen, he stares down the corridor to the bunks, stomach churning nervously as he tries to work out what to do...

Shaking his head at his own anxiety, he takes a deep breath and walks down towards Noel's bunk. Reaching it, he quietly pushes aside the curtain, whispering Noel's name as he does so, not wanting to startle his friend.

Noel's awake, and drawing in a sketch pad when Dave peeks inside, and he looks up with a scowl, his expression softening when he sees it's Dave.

"Sorry, thought you were Mike. Something I can do for you?"

"No, not really., Can I come in?"

Noel blinks, then sets his pad aside, nodding and scooting over to give Dave room. "Thought you were out with the others?" He asks, as Dave settles down into the small bunk.

Dave shrugs. "Wasn't really into it. Besides, I wanted to make sure you were okay."

"You didn't need to come back on my behalf, I'm fine." There's the softest of smiles on Noel's face though, and Dave makes a mental note to thank Mike when he sees him next; probably sometime tomorrow afternoon.

Dave spies a small bottle of whiskey lodged next to the pillow, and sighs, pulling it out and inspecting it; it's half empty. "It's not good to drink on your own you know."

Noel shrugs, looking down, fringe obscuring his features, and Dave puts the bottle down, reaching out to gently touch Noel's shoulder, squeezing a little. "It won't always be like this you know. Julian won't always be going home between shows. It's just, well, we're near his home, and you can't blame him for wanting to go and see his kids."

Noel nods, still not looking up, but leaning a little into Dave, and Dave slowly moves closer, wrapping his arms around Noel and pulling him to him. To his surprise, Noel lets him, laying his head on Dave's shoulder and sniffing.

"It's just, I miss him, you know, even when he's about, I still miss him. And I know it's selfish, I mean, he's got a family now. But it's not like the old days; me and Julian going out, drinking every night, having fun. It's like he's grown up and left me behind." His voice is choked by the end, and Dave doesn't have to see his face to know he's crying. His heart aches for the usually so vibrant man, who seems so small and fragile in his arms now. Gently, he runs his hand through Noel's hair, stroking softly, trying to offer what little comfort he can.

"He still loves you, you know."

"Not like he used to. Not when we were..." He trails off, but Dave knows what he was about to say; despite their best attempts, they'd all known that the boundaries of Julian's and Noel's friendship were blurred at best. And they'd all kept quiet about it, because it was none of their business, and if it made the two of them happy then who were they to judge?

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming,
Or the moment of the truth in your lies.

But that had all changed when Julia had the twins, Julian wanting to settle down and be a proper father to them, and that meant spending more time with them, even when they were on tour, like this evening. Dave couldn't blame him, but right now, seeing Noel so broken because Julian wasn't here, he wanted to kill the older man for doing it to him.

He sighs, thinking over his words carefully. "Things can't always stay the same, Noel, however much we want them to. Sometimes... Circumstances change, and people change, and..." He trails off, not rally knowing what to say. "You're not on your own though. You've still got Mike, and Rich, and me."

I just want you to know who I am...

Noel nods against Dave's shoulder, exhaling shakily, breath warm against the skin of Dave's neck. "I know. Thank you." He snuggles closer, and Dave feels his heart skip as he breaths in his scent, sweet, like vanilla and strawberry cream. His fingers trail across Noel's back, feeling the warmth that soaks through his thin shirt. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

Dave smiles softly. "Drink yourself stupid and mope all day and night."

"Probably." Noel laughs lightly, and Dave's stomach flips. They sit like that for a few moments then, silence shrouding them, Dave's arms wrapped around Noel protectively.

"I really loved him, you know," Noel says finally, voice barely above a whisper. "I really fucking did."

Dave feels his chest tighten at that, squeezing Noel closer to him as the other man sniffs again, nuzzling at Dave's throat, and it's so fucking wrong, but Dave can't help the little flood of warmth that pools in his stomach at the contact. He hates himself for it though, feels like he's taking advantage of Noel in such a vulnerable state, even though he hasn't done anything, just thought it.

"I know you did, Noel." Dave's fingers are still working their way through Noel's hair, smoothly and steadily. "And he's a fucking idiot to let you go, he really is. I wouldn't..." He trails off as soon as he realises what he's said, guts twisting and chest tightening painfully. His breathing slows, softening as he waits for Noel's reaction.

When everything feels like the movies,
Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive.

"You wouldn't?" Noel says finally, leaning up to look at Dave carefully. His eyes are bloodshot, but open, and so honest that Dave feels like he's drowning in them. His breathing hitches as Noel trails a finger across his cheek softly, palm cupping his jaw gently. "You're so beautiful, Dave. You know that? Why are you single?"

"Can't get a girl to stay with me." He fakes a smile, insides churning at the way Noel's looking at him. "You know what I'm like."

"Yeah, I do," there's no hint of irony or humour in Noel's voice though, as there had been Dave's. He's completely serious, as he stares at Dave, eyes soft. "Would you really? Keep me I mean? Not let me go?"

"I'd keep you forever," Dave says, with conviction now, because Noel asked, and he won't lie to him, not about something like this. Not even with his pulse hammering in his throat, blood loud in his ears.

It seems like slow motion to Dave, as Noel cups his jaw, leaning forward, eyes slipping closed as he presses their lips together so fucking sweetly and chastely that Dave almost forgets how to breathe. He's flushed he knows, eyes wide and surprised, heart racing as Noel pulls back, looking down, and it's not 'til then that Dave realises he hadn't kissed back, and Noel's probably embarrassed and thinking the worst right about now.

And I'd give up forever to touch you,
Cause I know that you feel the same now.

Inhaling shakily, and swallowing, Dave reaches out, palm finding Noel's chin as he lifts his head, smiling at him softly before leaning in and doing what he's wanted to do for so long now.

The kiss is, if possible, even more tender this time, although less chaste, with both their lips moving together softly. Noel parts his first, lapping lightly at Dave's, then pulling his tongue back to encourage Dave to follow, and it's like everything Dave's ever imagined; sweet, and warm and soft, and fucking intoxicating. They're both breathing heavily when they part, hands caressing faces as they lean their foreheads together, breathing in the same air.

You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be,
And I don't want to go home right now.

"I don't... I can't promise anything. I want to, I love you, but I don't know..."

"Shush," Dave quiets Noel's insecurities with a soft kiss to his lips, lingering for just a second before he pulls back, smiling at him as he strokes his cheek. "I know. I'm not asking for anything from you Noel. I just want you to know that I care. I really bloody care about you. And I'm here."

"I'm glad." Noel moves forward again, tucking himself into Dave's side, and Dave brings his arms up again, encircling him. "Stay with me tonight, Dave. Please. I don't want to be on my own. I just want you to hold me, like this."

Dave nods, stroking Noel's hair once more. "Always."

And as he slips down into the bed, pulling Noel down with him, tucking the duvet around them both, Noel melding himself to his side, he can't help but think, that this is more than he ever imagined he'd get from Noel, and right now, it's enough.

And all I can taste is this moment,
And all I can breathe is your life,
And sooner or later it's over,
I just don't want to miss you tonight.

As he lies there, Noel wrapped up in his arms, his chest feels lighter than it has in such a long time, and he feels more content, as Noel's breathing finally evens out, and he spends the rest of the night, just watching him sleep...

I just want you to know who I am...
