Identity Crisis
Noel is a natural blond. He often laughs about how he is the odd one in his family - - in more than one way. His mother, his father, his brother are all short and dark-haired. Noel towers over them all with his sandy mane. It naturally darkens over time and Noel occasionally adds blond highlights to lighten it a bit, but he was born with blond hair and he is still very blond when he first meets Julian.
Julian loves Noel’s hair. He is constantly caressing it, running his fingers through it as they write for their show, spend time together at the pub, waste time in front of the telly, snuggle up together between sweat-and-semen soaked sheets at night. During this “honeymoon” phase of their relationship, Noel is blissfully happy.
Things become a bit complicated when Julian begins dating Julia. Noel isn’t jealous, not really. He and Julian have never been exclusive. Dee has always been on the scene, plus there have been other girls that one or both of them have picked up after gigs. In fact, Noel genuinely likes Julia. She’s funny, warm, kind, and totally accepting of Julian and Noel’s personal, as well as professional, relationship. She’s good for Julian, she’s perfect for him, she brings out the very best in him and Noel loves her for it.
Noel has only one problem. Occasionally, Julian calls him Julia. It doesn’t happen often, and it’s usually when Julian is a bit drunk. But it happens, especially when they’re in bed. Noel can’t help but feel hurt when this occurs, but he patiently endures these occasional lapses until the end of the first television series.
Noel doesn’t confront Julian with the problem. Instead, he visits his hairdresser and dyes his hair black. When Julian sees Noel the first time after the dye job, his face falls a bit at first. Noel’s stomach clenches at the look on Julian’s face. But then, Julian reaches out and gently runs his fingers through the soft, dark strands and his face lights up in a genuine smile. “You look beautiful,” he breathes. Noel’s face lights up in an answering smile. That night, their lovemaking is more passionate than usual, harking back to the early days of their relationship. Julian doesn’t call him Julia once.
The dye job seems to do the trick. Julian never again calls Noel by Julia’s name, even when he’s drunk. Everyone else loves the black hair. Julia seems especially taken by Noel’s new look. “It really suits you,” she tells him. “I love how the black hair makes your blue eyes stand out even more. It really is a good look for you, Noel.”
Years fly by. The television show, the tours, the twins. Noel and Julian are still close, but their physical relationship gradually fades. An occasional cuddle, a stolen kiss is about the only physical contact in which they now indulge. Julian has his family, Noel has Lliana, and they are both content and happy with their respective lives.
The two couples decide to spend a rare evening dining out. They sit at a table, enjoying drinks and comfortable conversation. Lliana’s phone rings and she steps away from the table to take the call. Julian decides to visit the loo. Noel and Julia are alone at the table. Noel self-consciously runs his fingers through his hair.
“I’ve always thought you looked good with black hair. That platinum blond look you had a few years ago didn’t suit you at all,” Julia smiles.
“Yeah, I’ve really gotten used to it and I guess everyone else has, too. There was a huge outcry among the Boosh fans about that Billy Idol hair. Still, sometimes I think I’m ready for a change. Something more like my natural color, though. I don’t know - -“ Noel trails off, his train of thought derailed by memories of why he had dyed his hair black in the first place.
“I think it’s a good idea, if that’s what you want to do,” Julia speaks quietly. “I’ll admit, when you dyed your hair black all those years ago, I was thrilled. I thought it was brilliant, I’d have said anything to keep you from going back to blond. But it really doesn’t matter; you should do what you want.”
Noel raises a quizzical eyebrow at his old friend. “I’m not sure I follow.”
Julia laughs softly. “I thought your black hair would solve a little problem of mine. But it didn’t. It made no difference at all.” Julia stops for a moment, looks Noel straight in the eye and smiles gently. “You see, even now, on the rare occasion when he gets blind drunk, Julian still calls me Noel in bed.”

This story was actually inspired by the conversations on tumblr about Julian having a "type" -- a conversation that my husband and I have had on more than one occasion. Even without blond hair, Noel bears a striking resemblance to Julia.
Again, thanks for reading and the lovely review!
